SCADA Overview

SCADA systems are used to monitor and control a plant or equipment in industries such as transportation, telecommunications, water and waste control, energy, oil and gas etc.

These systems encompass the transfer of data between a SCADA central host computer and a number of Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) and/or Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).

RUP SCADA RTU is a PC-based system with analogue and digital input/output (I/O) interfaces to the instrumentation and control systems. The I/O to the RTU is done via 3rd-party hardware. The choice of I/O hardware is dependent on the scale of the field I/O.

SCADA systems can be relatively simple, such as one that monitors environmental conditions of a small office building, or very complex, such as a system that monitors all the activities in an oil/gas installation or the activities of a municipal water system or an oil/gas pipeline network.

RUP SCADA system can be scaled to support these environments.

RUP SCADA System Components

The following main elements make up the system:

  • SCADA Master Computer
  • PC-based SCADA RTU
  • 3rd Party I/O Devices
  • RUPDB SCADA Software Suite

SCADA System Operation

RUP SCADA System uses a PC-based RTU.

Since the RTU interfaces with the real-world devices, it is usually considered the eyes, ears and hands of the master station. The inclusion of a PC in the RTU design has made it possible to off-load the communication channel between the RTU and the SCADA master station as well as the master station computer by performing some of the further processing of field data traditionally done by the SCADA master computer at the RTU. In this way overall product cost is reduced, flexibility is improved and performance of the whole system is enhanced.

The RUP SCADA RTU can convert acquired field data to useful engineering values. It can function as a flow totaliser, data logger, sequence of events recorder etc.

The RUP SCADA RTU can also function as a secondary or backup SCADA master. This is logical since the RTU is usually located closest to field devices. History data recovery is provided between the RTU and the SCADA master to deal with glitches in communication networks.

RUPDB SCADA Software Suite

The RUPDB SCADA software is partitioned into logically complete modules, that can be tested and maintained independently. The SCADA system designer can then use the software suite to tailor the SCADA RTU and the SCADA master to different environments changing only the required modules.

Changes to the software modules are generally made via configuration files that the modules load into memory on start-up.
