Computer System Engineer UK

The job entails helping with all aspects of system configuration, building, testing and documentation of computer systems. Client contact, support and trouble-shooting will also be involved. The role may involve offshore and overseas work.

Below are the requirements to function in this role:

  • Good knowlege of Microsoft Office,and Microsoft Visio.
  • Good understanding of PC technology
    • Ability to identify, install and troubleshoot internal components of a PC
    • Hard drives - Ability to differentiate SATA, IDE and SCSI drives
    • RAM Memory - DDR, DDR2 and so on
    • Motherboard form factors - ATX, AT, Mini ATX etc
    • BIOS - Ability to configure the BIOS of a PC
    • Expansion bus - Familiarity with ISA, Cardbus, PCI, PCI Express
    • PC Interfaces - Familiarity with DVI-D, VGA, Firewire, USB, Bluetooth, etc.
  • Operating System knowledge
    • Good knowledge of MS-Windows - ability to install MS-Windows on a PC, ability to install drivers for PC devices, ability to install/uninstall software on MS-Windows, ability to use command line in MS-Windows, ability to write simple batch files in MS-Windows, ability to configure TCP/IP on MS-Windows.
    • Good knowledge of Linux/UNIX - ability to install Linux on a PC, ability to install/uninstall software on Linux, ability to use command line in Linux, ability to write simple shell scripts in Linux, ability to configure TCP/IP on Linux.
    • Fair knowledge of QNX - ability to install QNX on a PC, ability to install/uninstall software on QNX, ability to use command line in QNX, ability to write simple shell scripts in QNX, ability to configure TCP/IP on QNX.
  • Networking
    • Good experience of TCP/IP protocol stack: Telnet, SSH, FTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, SNMP, VPN, WWW etc
    • Ability to configure TCP/IP on MS-Windows and Linux
    • Familiarity with Ethernet Networking
    • Good knowledge of switching and routing
  • Good knowledge of mathematics.
  • Valid UK driving licence and own transportation.
  • Knowledge of MODBUS protocol and other industrial protocols is a bonus. This can be learnt on the job.

The position will pay £24,000 per annum. More or less could be offered depending on experience.
